Hometown Heroes Honoree
“The Hometown Heroes Program has provided a season-long tribute to our military past and present all season long with the help of the Dayton Development Coalition, Reynolds & Reynolds, and the Dayton Dragons.
Each month in the 2021 season there was a spotlight put on an individual, group, or organization that supports the military efforts in our community. In May, the Hometown Heroes Program welcomed out Dayton Blue Star Mothers, an organization made up of mothers of those who are currently serving or have served in the military. They focus on sending care packages to deployed military. During this game, we presented this group with a generous donation during an inning break.
In June, the program hosted Operation Cherrybend, whose focus is to educate the general public about the trials and challenges of wounded veterans, and veterans in general. They hold a weeklong event every year specifically for wounded combat veterans. They were presented with a check to help ensure that the costs of the many activities they offer is never a deterrent for those wanting to partake.
During July, the Hometown Heroes Program welcomed St. Vincent Supportive Services for Veteran Families, which is a program funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs whose mission is to assist veterans and their families with homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing. They were presented with a donation to assist in their community efforts in the Miami Valley.
At the beginning of August, we invited military families who unfortunately had to miss Mother’s or Father’s Day due to a parent being deployed over the last couple of years. These families were able to enjoy pregame activities on the plaza and then invited to watch the game from the luxury suite level here at Day Air Ballpark.
On August 22nd, we hosted our American Celebration Night where we show our appreciation to all military branches. This night caps off our Hometown Heroes Program and our season long tribute to the military. We were able to host an Air Force Swear In on the field in an inning break during the game and host many other organizations on the plaza before the game. Organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Army, and USAA came and set up on the plaza before the game to interact with all of the fans and show their support.
